Modernism’s Pacific Crossroads: R. L. Stevenson between Victorian Romance and American Adventure
Abstract:
For decades now, Robert Louis Stevenson, like H.G. Wells, has been knocking at the door of the Anglophone modernist canon. His works of the 1890s established him – alongside the French modernist Gauguin – as a European sentimentalist of the South Seas. We might now position Stevenson at the modernist crossroads in a new way. His career fits squarely within the two great genre systems of the 20th century west: European modernism and American mass culture. Zooming out, we can also locate Stevenson’s Pacific romance at the switch-point of several other epochal changes: from print to screen, from the Orient to Asia as the focus of western interest, and from aristocratic to technocratic varieties of modern adventure. In this talk, I trace these changes through the life and afterlife of Stevenson, ranging from his Samoan writing to Disney’s Treasure Island, from “The Bottle-Imp” (1891) to the Pacific romances of Margaret Mead (Coming of Age in Samoa, 1928) and James Michener (Tales of the South Pacific, 1948).
Professor Jed Esty 略歴
University of Pennsylvania の Vartan Gregorian Professor of English 。1850年以降の英語圏文学、特にモダニズム、批評理論、小説の歴史と理論、植民地・ポストコロニアル研究、ヴィクトリア朝小説、および1945年以降のアメリカ文化が専門。Yale で BA、Duke で PhD（博士号）を取得後、Harvard や University of Illinois での教歴を経て現職。著書にThe Future of Decline: Anglo-American Culture at its Limits (Stanford 2022)、Unseasonable Youth: Modernism, Colonialism, and A Shrinking Island: Modernism and National Culture in England he Fiction of Development (Oxford 2012)、 (Princeton 2004) 、共編著にPostcolonial Studies and Beyond (Duke 2005)、ポストコロニアル文学およびアメリカ少数民族文学におけるリアリズムをテーマとした MLQ の2012年特集号がある。現在のプロジェクトは Cold War Victorians: The Genre System of the Angloworld と題されている。Guggenheim Foundation、American Council of Learned Societies、National Endowment for the Humanities のフェローを歴任しており、Modern Fiction Studies、Victorian Studies、Modernism/Modernity、ALH、ELH、MLQ、PMLA、Representations、Contemporary Literature、Narrative、Novel、Yale Journal of Criticism などの雑誌に論文を発表。
