Wyndham Lewis, Vorticism, and the Machineries of War

Abstract: Machines, according to the modernist painter and writer Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), had a very particular significance for the visual arts. Whereas the Futurists held what Lewis called ‘a mythical attitude’ to the machine, Lewis argued that the artist’s task was not to celebrate the machine uncritically, but to adopt ‘a rational enthusiasm’ for the artistic and philosophical possibilities it implied. Vorticism, the avant-garde movement that emerged in response to Futurism, Cubism, and Expressionism, and which Lewis did so much to theorise, evolved a rational response to the machine’s influence on modern life. Yet this response was put under pressure by the First World War, which challenged the artists in Vorticism’s orbit to respond to new destructive technologies and took Lewis into the trenches as an Artillery Officer. This led to his appointment as an official war artist, and to his masterpiece of combat art, A Battery Shelled (1919). Using this painting as a case study, Nathan will discuss Vorticism’s relationship with the machine and the distinctive part Lewis played in assessing the impact of machinery on individuals governed by industrial-military systems.
Nathan Waddell（ネイサン・ウォデル）は、イギリス・バーミンガム大学の20世紀文学教授。Scott W. Kleinとともに、ウィンダム・ルイスの著作を全42巻にまとめるCollected Works of Wyndham Lewis（オックスフォード大学出版局）の共同総編集長を務めている。また、ルイスの生涯とキャリアに関する２冊の論文集、Wyndham Lewis: A Critical Guide (Edinburgh University Press, 2015)およびWyndham Lewis and the Cultures of Modernity (Ashgate, 2011)の共編者でもある。Nathanは2010年から2018年まで、The Journal of Wyndham Lewis Studiesの共同編集者を務めた。現在は、Andrzej Gasiorekとともに、Oxford Collected Worksの一環としてLewisの1932年の小説Snooty Baronetの共同編集を行っている。さらに現在、プリンストン大学出版局から出版予定の、ウィンダム・ルイスとファシズムに関する著書を執筆中。邦訳に編著『ジョージ・オーウェル『一九八四年』の現在地 文学・思想・メディアの交差点』（水声社、2025年）がある。
