■講演要旨:
Professor Daniel Gallimore will talk about his recent publication, The Japanese Shakespeare: Language and Context in the Translations of Tsubouchi Shoyo (Routledge, 2024).
In my lecture, I will introduce my recent book on the pioneering Shakespeare translations of Tsubouchi Shoyo (1859-1935), which is the first book-length study in English on Tsubouchi and Shakespeare. I argue that Tsubouchi’s influential view that literary geniuses such as Shakespeare effectively ‘conceal’ their ideals and convictions within their work in order to help readers better realize their own ideals presupposes Tsubouchi’s own domesticating response to Shakespearean drama, and in my book I explore this response within three main strands of (1) Tsubouchi’s background in Edo drama, Meiji language reform and Victorian Shakespeare scholarship, (2) his translation strategies, for example the distinctive sonority of his style, and (3) the production history of his translations in the context of modern Japanese drama. In my concluding chapter, I make a case for locating Tsubouchi’s field of cultural production within his assimilatory paradigm of native Japanese, universal Chinese and ‘spiritual’ Western elements. Given Tsubouchi’s polymathic reputation, my book is intended mainly as an introduction to his achievement, but I hope in my lecture to open up broader questions such as whether Tsubouchi’s translations are able (in the words of Walter Benjamin) to release Shakespeare’s ‘pure language’ in a way that does indeed ‘shine a light’ upon the original texts.
